Ubuntu smartphones should set their debut from October 2013

There are already Android smartphones, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Bada etc.. and Ubuntu will soon be added to this long list. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mark Shuttleworth, the founder and CEO of Canonical, said that smartphones running the Ubuntu operating system would be available starting from the month of October 2013.

He also said that application developers will have quick access to a version of the operating system that has been optimized for the Galaxy Nexus later this month. A unique feature of this smartphone is that it will be possible to couple the smartphon to a larger screen for use with a keyboard and mouse. The operating system can also run Windows applications streamed from a corporate server, giving business users the ability to access all enterprise data via a single device.

Shuttleworth also said that smartphones Ubuntu will be available in two main geographical areas later this year. He did not give lots of detail but says that North America is "absolutely a key market for Ubuntu," and that the operating system has even attracted the interest of some mobile network operators.
